Project management and consulting for new rbb online CMS

rbb commissioned FLYING EYE with the development of a concept for the API-centred content publishing of all its online services and products with the aim of migrating the existing monolithic operation platform to a microservices-based architecture.

We formed a project team by including representatives of the rbb subsections involved and dived into the existing backend infrastructure with a special focus on the CMS, internal and external interfaces and systems and also the current playing logic for the various front ends (apps, hbbTV, ARD deliveries, rbb-online.de etc). This enabled us to quickly gain a basic understanding of the framework conditions and guide rails of the new architecture and also of the requirements for new utilisation logic.

We also analysed the current methods of working and points of pain in editorial work for placing various rbb products and online platforms and developed answers to the central question as to what rbb wishes to achieve with its relaunch both from a technical point of view and with regard to user experience.

As a result, we presented our concept for the new system architecture for the back end and front end to rbb including editorial requirements plus an estimation of costs and a time schedule with the main milestones as a first step.

As a second step, we developed a detailed project plan for implementing this concept. In addition to the detailed definitions of the project phases and work packages, this contained resource planning, risk management, project controlling and the tools to realise the project. FLYING EYE held various workshops at rbb for the formulation of the content of the work packages.

On the basis of our work, rbb is now initiating the next steps towards a comprehensive relaunch of its backend infrastructures. Further changes will then be carried out successively according to agile principles on this basis in the coming years in order to be able to adjust to the constantly changing and growing demands of online products.
