NEWS aND central control room now also automated: building a new control room E at RBB (control room AUTOMATION)

Control Room E in Berlin was a traditional news control room for rbb’s “Abendschau” (Evening Show). It was also used as the central control room for large events like the Berlin Marathon. For the new room, FLYING EYE needed to determine the basic requirements for working with control room automation in the future, and support the tender process. We also accompanied the startup.

To do so, we analyzed the workflows with the affected editorial staff and included the existing graphics workflows and playout processes. In close cooperation with the planning team, we created block diagrams, quantity lists and budgets. After creating an EU-wide call for tenders, we coordinated all of the important issues with the Steering Committee, the Personnel Board, the Company Medical Officer and Purchasing. We acted as project managers for the construction phase, and we coordinated timelines and training plans, system tests and the RBT in our role as the review firm for the main components.

Control Room E still serves as a news control room and as the central control room. But following the switch to HD, it now also has a control room automation component. We connected the control room to tapeless production (file-based, VPMS). Now the station can automate complex editing tasks while retaining the functionality of a central control room.
