More productive despite shrinking resources: Introducing file-based production throughout WDR

In its tv 20:15 umbrella project, Westdeutsche Rundfunk (WDR) implemented file-based work for the entire TV production process – planning and researching segments, ingest, editing, playout and archiving. tv 20:15 coordinated and networked the following projects: “High-Res Archive,” “Central TV Exchange Platform (Zentrale Austauschplattform Fernsehen, ZAP)” and “Journalist Cockpit / Open Media” in order to develop new workflows and use the full potential of file-based technology.

FLYING EYE provided comprehensive support for tv 20:15 and its sub-projects with project planning and project management, strategic consulting and risk management as well as extensive system planning. We also designed a modern IT-based and cross-site TV production system. In addition, we were responsible for quality management. Aside from project and system documentation, we also ensured successful system testing.

Our work allowed WDR to improve its productivity through new, standardized work methods, and we laid the groundwork for a new technical infrastructure. In this way, despite a reduction in personnel resources and the available financial resources, WDR is able to maintain its usual high programming quality.
