Uninterrupted security: Workflow analysis for network operations centers

The European Broadcasting Union has network operations centers (NOCs). These NOCs are designed to be failsafe, and to operate without interruptions. All information and signals directly relating to the state of the network are received in these centers. In addition, all incoming and outgoing broadcast signals from various sources are routed and delivered to the sinks. That ensures worldwide transmission of major sporting events, for example. On behalf of the EBU, FLYING EYE analyzed network operations center workflows.

To this end, we used the ETXM method (Entry-Task-Measurement-Exit) to conduct interviews with employees in the Planning, Operations and Accounting departments in order to assess the necessary resources, time frames and workload peaks. On this basis, we developed recommendations for optimizing workflows and utilizing synergies within the participating roles and departments.

Thanks to our work, the EBU was able to optimize the distribution of tasks among the participating roles and find automation potential within the process. Because of the improved workflow, we were able to improve the quality of service and responsiveness. In the future, the EBU will be able to scale the NOC even better and easily integrate additional branches.
