The most important noon format is reinventing itself: Creating the MiMa noontime show for ARD

Since January 2018, rbb has produced ARD’s noontime show MiMa, Monday through Friday, every other week. MiMa is broadcast from ZDF’s capital-city studio in Zollernhof, in downtown Berlin, to take advantage of the studio’s proximity to political, cultural and social institutions. The editorial responsibility and journalistic support for ARD’s noontime show lies with rbb, but the station uses ZDF’s production environment. FLYING EYE helped the broadcaster with the technical realization.

We determined the basic requirements for connecting rbb in the Zollernhof building, and analyzed workflows with the affected editorial staff. We coordinated all of the technical and organizational issues between rbb and ZDF, along with timelines, training plans and system tests. We also created block diagrams, quantity lists and budgets in collaboration with the planning team, and supported the project through its handover to operations.

We laid the technical groundwork based on our recommendation, so rbb’s VPMS system now transmits on two EVS systems. The HDSDI outputs for both machines have been integrated into ZDF’s broadcast environment. The two networks can be used separately – the only interface is rbb’s integration into the ZDF graphics world. This model ensures clear separations and responsibilities.
