New requirements, new models: An organizational study of the Central Production Department at ARTE

In addition to the linear program, ARTE provides a wide range of content on additional digital channels: on smartphones and tablets, via smart TV and on the web. Changing distribution paths and new technical requirements mean new production paths, modern workflows and optimized interfaces.

In order to deal with these new challenges, the station hired FLYING EYE to analyze the organization of the Central Production Department (CPD). We compared it with common organizational models used by other television broadcasters, large producers, and companies in the digital sector. Last but not least, we held detailed interviews that included the program director, the program head and the department heads of the CPD; we got to know the organizational structure in detail, which allowed us to develop various objectives for a new organizational model.

In this way, we determined where synergies are possible and where activities can be combined. We identified work processes that ARTE should redesign before making any other changes, and we showed how the Central Department can be structured and managed more efficiently. Our focus here was on the management’s business-related and organizational objectives, as well as on the process organization.
